Rent Hub Terms of Service
These Terms govern the Rent-Hub mobile app and supporting website at RENT-HUB.CA. Rent-Hub connects people who offer items for rent (owners) with people who rent them (borrowers). Read these Terms and the rental summary before agreeing to a transaction.
Operator and acceptance
Rent-Hub is the business name used for this service. “Rent-Hub”, “we” and “us” refer to the business providing the service. Support and legal notices: Support@rent-hub.ca. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal information. You agree to these Terms by actively accepting them during registration or another acceptance step. Each rental also requires acceptance of its item, price, dates, payment schedule and disclosed conditions.
Eligibility and account security
You must be at least 18 and have reached the age of majority in your province or territory, have capacity to enter a contract, and provide accurate information. Accounts are personal unless a business account is expressly supported. Do not impersonate another person or create duplicate accounts to obtain rewards. Protect your login credentials and notify support promptly of unauthorized use. You are responsible for activity you authorize; these Terms do not make you automatically liable for every unauthorized transaction.
Role of the marketplace
The item rental is between the owner and borrower. Rent-Hub provides listing, request, payment, communication and recordkeeping services; it does not own, inspect or take possession of listed items. Verification or a review is not a guarantee of identity, safety, item condition or successful payment. Rent-Hub remains responsible for its own services and any obligations imposed by law. These Terms do not provide insurance or a damage protection plan.
Listings and owner responsibilities
Owners must have authority to rent the item, give accurate current photos and descriptions, disclose defects and safety limitations, and clearly state what is included. Items must be lawful, maintained, clean and safe for their intended use, with necessary instructions and warnings. Do not offer recalled items. Honour accepted availability, price and pickup arrangements. Business owners are responsible for licences, taxes and consumer disclosures applicable to their activity. Do not impose undisclosed fees or require a separate cash deposit at handoff.
Prohibited items and conduct
Do not list illegal, stolen or counterfeit goods; firearms, ammunition, explosives or weapons; hazardous substances; motor vehicles or boats; regulated medical devices; live animals; or recalled, unsafe or unlawfully supplied items. Ordinary permitted tools and outdoor equipment must satisfy the safety rules above. Rent-Hub may remove an item where its legality, safety or ownership cannot reasonably be established. Fraud, threats, harassment, discrimination, scams, fake reviews and payment manipulation are prohibited.
Requests and booking confirmation
A request, an “I can help” response or a chat does not by itself confirm a paid booking. This applies to both listed items and requests for items that are not yet listed. Complete the app’s approval and payment steps and check the booking status. Before commitment, the app must show the item, rental period, total price, applicable taxes, fees, credits, amount payable at approval, balance payable on return and cancellation conditions. A change to price, dates or charges requires agreement; it cannot be added silently after approval.
Rental payments and the amount at approval
Payments are processed through Stripe. Amounts are in Canadian dollars unless expressly stated otherwise. You authorize the disclosed payment at owner approval and the remaining agreed rental balance when return is confirmed, including a saved-card payment when you are not actively using the app. The app must record your payment authorization and provide a transaction receipt. Any later price change requires fresh agreement.
The approval payment is credited toward the total rental price. It is not an additional charge or a refundable damage-security deposit. The approval payment is 25% of the rental price, with no minimum or maximum advance-payment amount. The remaining 75% of the rental price is payable when return is confirmed. Amounts are rounded to the nearest cent, with any rounding difference reconciled in the final payment so that the total rental price is not exceeded. The rental summary must explain any applicable taxes and how promotional credits are applied. Applicable taxes are calculated before promotional credits are deducted. Credits then reduce the total amount payable, including applicable taxes; they do not reduce the rental price used to calculate those taxes. The final amount collected equals the agreed total due minus applied credits and amounts already paid, without duplicate collection. Eligible promotional credits selected for the booking are applied first against the 25% approval payment. Any remaining credit allocated to that booking is applied against the remaining 75% rental-price payment at return. Credits reduce the cash payable and are counted only once; they do not change the agreed rental price or the owner’s agreed share. The booking summary must show the credit allocated to each payment and the cash amount due at each stage. For example, a $40 rental with $15 in applied credits, before any applicable taxes, uses $10 credit against the approval payment, leaving $0 cash due at approval, and $5 credit against the $30 final payment, leaving $25 cash due at return.
No separate damage-security deposit or card hold is created by these Terms. If one is introduced, its amount, authorization, release conditions and dispute process must be separately disclosed and accepted. An initial payment, card hold or security deposit does not insure an item or cap responsibility for proven damage or loss.
Platform fee and owner payouts
Rent-Hub’s standard platform fee is 10% of the agreed rental price before applicable taxes. The owner’s share is 90% of that rental price. Rent-Hub currently covers Stripe payment-processing and Connect account, funds-routing and payout fees associated with the standard rental and payout flow; these fees are not additionally deducted from the owner’s 90% share or added to the borrower’s rental price. Taxes, refunds and disputed amounts must be shown separately. Promotional credits funded by Rent-Hub do not reduce the owner’s agreed rental earnings. Any future change to the platform fee or allocation of processing and payout fees will be disclosed before acceptance of a new booking and will not change the fee arrangement for a booking already accepted.
Owners must complete the Stripe Connect onboarding and payout requirements presented in the app. Payouts are initiated after return confirmation and successful collection, subject to identity checks, refunds, disputes and payment-provider requirements. A transfer to a connected Stripe account and a bank payout are different steps. Availability and bank arrival times depend on Stripe and the bank; Rent-Hub does not promise immediate settlement. We may delay the affected payout while investigating a specific payment or rental dispute, explain the reason where lawful and provide a way to contact support.
Failed payments and legitimate payment disputes
If an agreed payment fails, we may notify you, retry the authorized outstanding amount and ask you to update your payment method. We will not collect the same amount twice or use this authorization for unrelated charges. Renting may be restricted until an outstanding balance is resolved. Documented lawful recovery steps may follow after notice. You retain the right to dispute an unauthorized or incorrect charge with Rent-Hub, Stripe or your financial institution. A good-faith payment dispute is not fraud; deliberate false claims or duplicate recovery may lead to account action. Exceptional payment-provider chargeback and dispute fees are allocated to the party shown by the evidence to be responsible for causing the dispute through fraud, a breach of the rental agreement or these Terms, or another legally actionable act or omission, to the extent recovery is permitted by law. These fees are not included in Rent-Hub’s coverage of standard processing and payout costs. Recovery is limited to the actual, reasonable provider fee attributable to that party, net of any provider refund or other recovery, without markup or duplicate collection. Merely raising a good-faith dispute, or losing a card dispute, does not by itself establish responsibility. We provide notice of the proposed allocation, supporting evidence and the actual fee, and a reasonable opportunity to respond and request reconsideration before collection. An automatic card charge or deduction from owner earnings requires separately documented agreement or another lawful basis; an administrative finding alone does not establish that authority. We do not shift a fee caused by Rent-Hub’s own error or misconduct to a user. If a recovered fee is later refunded by the payment provider, we return the corresponding recovered amount to the party who paid it.
Pickup and return
Use the app’s QR confirmation process at actual pickup and actual return. Both parties should inspect the item and record dated condition photos and included accessories. Do not confirm a handoff that has not happened. Booking dates determine the agreed rental period; pickup records possession, and return records the handoff back. If a QR code fails, contact support and record the time and condition in the app. QR records are evidence and can be challenged if incorrect; they do not waive a damage claim or conclusively prove condition.
Borrower responsibilities and extensions
Use the item lawfully, safely and only for its intended purpose. Follow instructions, protect it against damage and theft, and do not transfer or subrent it without the owner’s agreement. Return the item with its accessories at the agreed time and in its pickup condition, allowing for ordinary wear. Request an extension before the deadline and obtain the owner’s approval. Owner-approved extra rental time uses the hourly or daily rental rate selected and agreed for that booking. The additional duration and price must be agreed and recorded in the booking before collection, with amounts already paid accounted for without duplicate collection. If the item is returned late without an approved extension, the extra time also uses the hourly or daily rate selected and agreed for that booking. For a daily booking, extra time is prorated using the agreed daily rate divided by 24, applied to the actual extra time; a partial day is not rounded up to a full additional day. For example, a two-hour late return on a $48-per-day booking adds $4 in rental charges before applicable taxes. For an hourly booking, partial hours are also prorated using the agreed hourly rate multiplied by the actual extra time expressed in hours; for example, 30 minutes adds half the hourly rate. The resulting extra rental charge is rounded to the nearest cent. The booking summary must disclose this rule and how extra time is measured and billed before the borrower accepts the booking. Late charges must reflect the actual extra time under that disclosed billing method, account for amounts already paid and comply with applicable law. These Terms impose no additional late penalty. Charging for extra time does not give the borrower permission to keep the item beyond the agreed return time.
Cancellations and refunds
Either party may cancel through the app before actual pickup. Under the standard pre-pickup cancellation policy, Rent-Hub retains its platform fee of 10% of the full agreed rental price before applicable taxes, whether the borrower or owner cancels, except where applicable law requires that fee to be refunded. The fee is retained from the advance already paid; it is not 10% of that advance and is not an additional fee on top of the disclosed platform fee. For example, for a $100 rental without taxes or promotional credits, the borrower pays $25 at approval; upon cancellation before pickup, Rent-Hub retains $10 and refunds $15. The remaining rental balance is not charged and the owner receives no rental earnings for the cancelled booking. Refunds are made to the original payment method. Promotional credits already used toward a booking are not restored if that booking is cancelled or refunded, except where applicable law requires otherwise. Unused credit, including credit reserved for an uncollected final payment, remains available. The booking summary must disclose this rule and how credits and taxes affect the cancellation calculation. These Terms do not authorize a separate additional cancellation charge to recover a fee exceeding the cash already collected. Owners must promptly cancel if the item cannot be supplied. Do not complete a pickup confirmation for a cancelled rental. Refund arrival depends on the payment provider and financial institution. Nothing in this policy limits a statutory cancellation, refund or other remedy; Rent-Hub will refund the platform fee as well where required by applicable law.
After pickup, there is no automatic refund for simply changing your mind. Returning an item early because it is no longer needed does not reduce the full agreed booking price or the remaining balance payable at return, unless the owner agrees to a reduction or applicable law requires a refund or adjustment. Contact support for an unsafe, materially misdescribed or unavailable item, owner breach or another genuine problem. Rent-Hub will review the evidence and any applicable right to a refund; statutory rights remain available. Any owner-approved early-return adjustment must be recorded in the booking before the final charge is calculated; payments already made and any applicable credits must be accounted for without duplicate collection. No undisclosed cancellation fee, additional processing-fee deduction or blanket “all sales final” rule applies under these Terms. The disclosed platform-fee retention described above is subject to applicable refund rights.
Damage loss theft and non return
Borrowers are responsible for proven damage caused by misuse or failure to take reasonable care and for loss, theft or non-return for which they are legally responsible during possession. They are not responsible for pre-existing defects or ordinary wear. Owners should report issues promptly, preferably within 24 hours of return or discovery, with pickup and return evidence, a description, and repair estimates or proof of value. This reporting preference does not extinguish statutory rights or a valid claim discovered later.
Claims should reflect reasonable repair costs or the item’s substantiated value, taking age, condition and depreciation into account, without duplicate recovery from insurance or another source. Liability may exceed the initial rental payment. An owner’s allegation alone does not authorize an automatic damage charge. We will notify the borrower, share relevant evidence with appropriate privacy protections and provide a reasonable opportunity to respond. Additional damage, replacement or other disputed charges require a separately documented agreement or another lawful basis for collection.
If a borrower fails to return an item by the agreed deadline without an approved extension, the owner should promptly report the non-return to Rent-Hub and retain the booking and handoff evidence. The borrower remains obliged to return the item and is responsible for legally recoverable loss resulting from the non-return, subject to the evidence and valuation rules above. Rent-Hub does not guarantee return of an item, recovery of money from a borrower, or the success of a saved-card charge. Except where required by applicable law or expressly agreed by Rent-Hub in a separate written agreement, Rent-Hub has no obligation to replace the item or reimburse the owner for a borrower’s non-return, theft, loss or failure to pay. Any assistance with contacting a borrower, preserving records, a payment dispute or an owner’s lawful recovery steps does not make Rent-Hub an insurer or guarantor. An owner may pursue available legal remedies against the borrower or report suspected crime to the appropriate authorities. This clause does not exclude liability arising from Rent-Hub’s own conduct where that liability cannot lawfully be excluded, or reduce amounts already collected and lawfully owed to the owner.
Disputes and evidence
Contact Support@rent-hub.ca with the booking number and relevant messages, photos, QR records and payment receipts. We may seek both parties’ accounts, temporarily hold the affected payout and assist with a resolution. We will explain a platform decision and provide a way to request reconsideration. An administrative decision about an account, refund or payout is not a binding court determination of legal liability. Nothing requires you to use mandatory arbitration or give up lawful court, regulator or consumer remedies.
Messaging contact details and reviews
Keep payments for bookings made through Rent-Hub within the app. Do not solicit outside payment, evade platform fees, send spam or share unlawful material. The app screens messages for prohibited contact sharing and attempts to move transactions outside the platform. Contact details are restricted before the approval payment succeeds and may then be shared as needed for the rental. Filtering can miss information or block legitimate text; use support when needed. Do not place personal contact information in public listings or requests.
Messages are stored and may be screened automatically or reviewed by authorized staff for support, safety, moderation and disputes as described in the Privacy Policy. They are not represented as end-to-end encrypted. Reviews must reflect an actual experience. We may remove unlawful, abusive, irrelevant or manipulated content; we will not remove a review solely because it is negative.
Promotional account credits
During the applicable listing promotion, an eligible account can receive one $10 credit after publishing 10 valid, distinct item listings. During the completed-rental promotion, both the borrower and the owner can each receive one $5 credit in their own eligible account after a full rental cycle has completed, including return confirmation and successful final payment. Cancelled, refunded, incomplete or unresolved disputed rentals do not qualify. Each account may earn the $5 completed-rental reward only once in total, whether participating as borrower or owner. These two rewards may each be earned once per account, for a combined maximum of $15 under these offers.
The $5 launch offer is limited to the first 100 qualifying completed rentals across the platform for which at least one participant is eligible for their first $5 completed-rental reward, with up to two $5 awards per qualifying rental: one for the eligible borrower and one for the eligible owner. A participant who has already earned this reward cannot earn it again, even in the other role. Rewards are promotional rental credit, not cash, stored deposits or owner earnings. They cannot be withdrawn or transferred. Duplicate listings, fake rentals, self-dealing and multiple-account reward abuse are ineligible. We may correct an erroneous award or reverse a fraudulent award after explaining the reason and allowing a response. Legitimately earned credit is governed by the offer accepted when it was earned. Each qualifying rental counts once toward the 100-rental limit, whether one or both participants receive a reward. A rental between two participants who have both already earned this reward does not count toward that limit and generates no further $5 reward. Qualifying rentals are counted in the order their full rental cycle is completed, including return confirmation and successful settlement of the final rental amount through payment, eligible credits or both.
The $10 listing credit and $5 completed-rental credit may be combined toward the original booking price and its applicable taxes, up to the available balance. Credits do not cover extensions, late-return charges, damage or other additional charges. Taxes are calculated first; credits then reduce the approval payment first and the final payment second, as described in Section 7. Unused balances do not expire and remain available for future eligible bookings. Credits have no cash value and cannot be transferred. Used credits are not restored after cancellation or refund, and eligibility to earn the same one-time reward is not renewed, except where applicable law requires otherwise. Unused amounts reserved for an uncollected payment remain available. Before permanent account deletion, we show the remaining credit balance and warn that completing deletion forfeits it, without affecting owner earnings or cash refunds lawfully owed. Each offer must publish its eligibility and use rules before it begins. Any contest or prize draw requires separate rules.
User content and platform rights
You retain ownership of your listings, photos and other content. You grant Rent-Hub a non-exclusive licence to host, display, reproduce and technically adapt that content as reasonably necessary to operate and promote the relevant listing within the service. This does not authorize unrelated reuse of personal messages or identity records in advertising. You must have the necessary rights to submit content. Rent-Hub and its licensors retain rights in the app, brand and software. Do not copy or disrupt the service unlawfully.
Account restrictions and deletion
We may remove content or restrict an account for a material Terms violation, credible fraud or safety risk, or legal or payment-provider requirements. We will give reasons and an opportunity to respond where practicable, except where immediate action or restricted disclosure is necessary. Restrictions do not automatically forfeit lawful owner earnings or valid refunds. You may request account deletion using the Delete Account option in the app or by emailing Support@rent-hub.ca. Requests are completed within 10 business days, as described in the Privacy Policy. Outstanding rentals, legal obligations and disputes must be addressed, but unnecessary personal information will be deleted or de-identified as described in the Privacy Policy. Before completing permanent account deletion, we display any unused promotional credit balance and warn that deletion forfeits it under Section 16; owner earnings and cash refunds lawfully owed remain payable.
Taxes insurance and risk
Users are responsible for applicable tax reporting and required tax collection for their rental activity, except amounts Rent-Hub is legally required to collect or remit. Rent-Hub does not provide tax advice. Users should check whether their own insurance covers lending, rental use, theft and liability. No insurance coverage is promised by a listing, payment, verification or these Terms. Use judgment at handoffs and report unsafe conduct.
Service disclaimers and liability
Subject to applicable law, we do not guarantee continuous availability, error-free operation, or the accuracy and safety of user listings. We take reasonable care in providing the platform. Nothing excludes a non-waivable consumer warranty or Rent-Hub’s own legal obligations.
To the extent permitted by law, Rent-Hub is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, and its aggregate liability for claims connected with the service is limited to the greater of CAD $100 or the platform fees you paid or that were deducted from your rental earnings in the preceding 12 months. This limit does not cap amounts we owe you as refunds or owner earnings. It does not apply to fraud, wilful misconduct, gross negligence, or any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited. A court may find a limitation inapplicable in particular circumstances; statutory rights prevail.
To the extent permitted by law, you are responsible for reasonable third-party claims arising from your unlawful conduct, infringement of another person’s rights or material breach of these Terms, to the extent caused by you. You are not required to indemnify Rent-Hub for Rent-Hub’s own fault or non-waivable obligations. We will notify you of a relevant claim and allow reasonable participation; we cannot settle in a way that imposes obligations on you without your agreement.
Governing law and changes
Ontario law and applicable federal Canadian law govern these Terms, subject to mandatory protections and jurisdiction rights in your province or territory. No term waives those rights or prevents a regulator complaint. An invalid provision is severed only to the extent necessary. Failure to enforce a term is not a waiver. These Terms and the specifically accepted rental summary and promotional rules form the relevant agreement; no undisclosed policy is incorporated.
We will make updated Terms accessible and give reasonable advance notice of material changes. Changes apply prospectively and do not rewrite existing bookings or earned promotions without agreement or a lawful requirement. We will obtain renewed acceptance when required. Privacy consent is addressed separately in the Privacy Policy. Questions and notices: Support@rent-hub.ca, Rent-Hub.
